What is a Surgical Wound?

Surgical wounds are incisions made during surgery that have not healed properly. Surgical wounds can form during plastic surgery procedures that use drains.  Any wounds that are present and that have been the site of a procedure in which foreign objects like scalpels break the skin are at high risk for infection.

Types of surgical wounds that need to be repaired

  • Clean wounds that show no sign of infection/inflammation.
  • Clean and contaminated wounds in high-risk areas
  • Surgical wounds in which instruments break the skin through the wound area.

Treatment for Surgical Wounds

If a surgical wound fails to heal after about five weeks, it may be considered a chronic wound or non-healing surgical wound. A wound expert should be consulted to create a a treatment plan for the fastest route to recovery.
