An ulcerating cancer wound is when a cancer that is growing under the skin breaks through the skin and creates a wound. These ulcers are caused by skin cancer or the spread of cancer from elsewhere. These types of skin ulcers are called malignant skin ulcers. Cancers which can spread to the skin include breast cancer, and cancers of the head and neck or genital areas.
A common treatment for a Marjolin Ulcer is Mohs surgery, which is done to remove the cancer. The surgery is done in several stages. Your doctor will remove a layer of your skin, look at the layer under a microscope, and then keep repeating the process until there are no longer any cancer cells.
